sarandipity endeavors to use "chocolate with a conscience" in all its products.
We always prefer to use organic fair trade chocolate, however, due to availability the chocolate we use may at times be either fair trade or organic.
Why not use regular chocolate?
Because: Very little of the profit for regular chocolate goes to the farmers who grow the cocoa beans. Cocoa farmers receive about a penny for a candy bar selling for 60 cents. In fact, the difficulty in making a living at cocoa farming has spawned an increase in child and even slave labor drawn from poor countries such as Ghana and the Ivory Coast. Children and other workers are forced to work long days picking and processing cocoa beans (it takes 400 of these pods to make just one pound of chocolate). Very few of the children have the opportunity to attend school.
Because: Fair trade is a partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect, that seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, disadvantaged producers and workers. Fair trade guarantees a minimum price under direct contracts, prohibits abusive child labor, and promotes environmental sustainability.
Because: Fair trade products have helped to build economic independence and empower small farmer organizations and their members, bringing them stability and a higher standard of living. Fair trade chocolate gives farmers the sufficient income they need to support their families with dignity.
Because: sarandipity believes everyone can make small choices in the products they buy - to support organics, support fair trade, support sustainable practices - and that collectively those choices mean big change. Now that's buying power! |
